Back in 1961, Gene McDaniels had a hit song called “100 Pounds of Clay.” My brother was much older than I was and I remember him buying the record and playing it over and over again.

The first verse in the song goes like this:

He took a hundred pounds of clay And then He said “Hey, listen” “I’m gonna fix this-a world today” “Because I know what’s missin’ ” Then He rolled his big sleeves up And a brand-new world began He created a woman and-a lots of lovin’ for a man Whoa-oh-oh, yes he did

Of course we assume that Gene is singing about God creating woman; but how accurate are these statements?

1.   Adam was created from the “dust of the earth.”  Dust is dry and without moisture. However, clay is dust combined with moisture.

Genesis, Chapter 2, Verse 7

And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

2.  Eve (woman) was never created from the dust of the earth or clay. She was created from Adam’s rib.

Genesis, Chapter 2, Verses 21 to 23

[21] And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;

[22] And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.

[23] And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.

Are these facts really important and is singing this song a sin?  Let me ask you a question: Suppose you decided to build the best race car on the planet.  You worked very hard and put a great deal of effort into building it; including building the body out of shock resistant polycarbonate material inlaid in gold and precious pearls.  Your race car was so well constructed it had an appraised value of $2.8 million dollars.

How would you feel if someone wrote a song about you and your race car and said it was made out of scrap iron and rejected parts from the local junkyard.  Would you be insulted? I bet you would. And God is insulted when His work is degraded by His creation that He loves so much.

As Christians, it is important that we pray and ask God on a daily basis to reveal our sins to us.  This way we can quickly ask forgiveness and live better and more productive lives by the improvement of our relationship with Jesus Christ.  Remember to talk to Him right now, wherever you are. No one will know you are talking to God and is He is willing to listen and teach you His ways.  God is so awesome; His ways are beyond understanding!

I am writing this article during a time of great pain.  I am doing this so as to capture the pain of sin as best I can.  If I wait until tomorrow and try to write this article it will not be the same as writing it during the pain I am experiencing right now.

Hidden under several towels I had been saving money in my kitchen drawer for almost one year.  I had saved several thousand dollars (the amount of which really does not matter) and I was happy about the blessings I received this year.  In order to share that happiness I found a family that claimed to be starving and in need of food.  So I decided to adopt them for Thanksgiving and help them out in any way I could.

I began by taking Jenny Gibson (the mother) to the store and buying over $600 in groceries to feed her family. I also drove her back to the apartment and watched the children carry in the groceries.  They were so hungry that they immediately devoured a sack of oranges; their little bodies craving Vitamin C.  Next, I took her children to the store and bought over $350 in clothing, including shoes and coats since they had none.  My heart was glad and I was so happy to see the happiness on the face of everyone in the family.

A few days later it was Thanksgiving.  The family was so grateful to me for buying their groceries that they returned the favor by bringing Thanksgiving to me.  I was so happy that they cared about me. In fact, we all prayed together and all the people in the family gave thanks that I was now a part of their lives.  Of course this caused me to drop my guard because I thought I had made some wonderful new friends.  And of course I never would have believed that they would steal all my money; especially knowing that part of it was earmarked for needy children and families at Christmas time.

The moment I found the money missing it felt like a bucket of cold water had been poured over my head.  Every bit of life drained out of me and I felt violated, like I had been raped. The amount of money I lost may be devastating but it is not the focus of my pain.  The actual pain of this sin is derived from the fact that I was deceived.  My heart hurts so bad because I really thought I had a family that cared about me and would possibly be in my life for a long time.  Since I have no children or living relatives I was hoping to be part of a family and fill my lonely life.  But the family I trusted had the ability to steal everything I had.  That hurts very deeply.  Even though I had come to their rescue during their time of need, they repaid me by financially hurting me so that it will take me months to regain the money that was stolen.

How can people do these things to people who are good to them?  I bet if you went to Jenny and Matt Gibson(s) house right now and confronted them with the truth, they would have an excuse already formulated in their brains.  I know because I have heard these lies all before and am fully aware that Satan enters into unsaved people and begins the temptation process.

From the events that occurred, I surmise the following:  Jenny must have been cooking Thanksgiving dinner and discovered the money I had hidden in the drawer.  However, she did not take it on that day because the money was still there on December 1.  Instead, Satan began tempting her. He told her that I had too much money and she and her family needed it more than I did. He probably told her that I was going to give away the money to help children anyway, and since her children needed help, it was okay to take the money and use it for them.  Of course there are a million more excuses Satan could have used, but regardless, he tempts people and they commit the sin.  Satan cannot actually commit the sin; he can only tempt the sinner.  God gave everyone a free will and this is one prime example of this free will in action.

Looking back I actually remember now when the money was stolen.  Although Jenny did not take the money from the kitchen drawer on Thanksgiving day she kept coming back to the house; but she was unable to gain access to the drawer without me noticing her.  Finally, she had a plan.  She called and asked if she could clean my house because she needed the money.  Of course I agreed because I wanted to help her out.  That was the perfect time to steal the money from the drawer.  In fact, she had her daughter Samantha drive to my house and meet her there so that Jenny could give Samantha the money and remove it from my house.  This way, if I found the money missing while Jenny was at my house, there would be no evidence she had it on her.

How do I know this?  Because while Jenny was cleaning my kitchen I felt an unrest and walked into the kitchen (close to the drawer.)  Samantha immediately jumped up, gave me a hug and said she had just dropped by to say hello and that she had to be to another appointment in 7 minutes.   It was during this time (when my mind was being diverted by Samantha) that her mother removed the envelope of money out of the kitchen drawer and handed it to her daughter, who promptly left.  I knew something was very odd about this and Jenny started cleaning the house very quickly claiming that her husband was locked out of the house and she needed to get home and let him in.  It is so sad the depth people go to think of lies that are so shallow and fake.  It amazes me every time.

What a fool I am.  Why did I trust this family? I spent the first two hours telling myself how stupid I was, but God soon showed me that I was being selfish.  I was focusing on my feelings, not the magnitude of the situation.  It was then God told me to count my blessings and take my eyes off myself.  He pointed out the following blessings I had received and how Jenny was already the loser:

1.   God has given me many gifts, including the ability to write.  I can always earn the money back that was stolen from me.  However, Jenny will spend the money she stole and still be poor. She has gained nothing.

2.  Jenny and her family have lost the love and support of a truly good person. I could have been a positive effect in her and her children’s lives for many years to come, yet Jenny gave all this up for a few thousand dollars that will be spent in ninety days or less.

3.  During the time of our brief friendship, two of her children spent a weekend at my house.  At that visit the children spent 7 hours asking me question after question about God, the Bible and the 1,000 year reign of Christ.  They were hungering for the truth.  I answered all their questions and was so filled with the Holy Spirit that I thanked God for using me to witness to the children in this manner.

Note: This benefit in itself is priceless. No amount of money could be worth more than this.

4.  This incident has also caused me to make haste in moving from the town of Colorado Springs to a rural area where I can direct my mind more toward the Lord. Although this is a beautiful place and tourists come here throughout the year to see its beauty, there are still mean and evil people who live in it.  Colorado Springs is a city just like any other city and Jenny and her family proved that to me beyond a shadow of a doubt.

5.  Although I lost quite a bit of money, I still have enough money in the bank to live; so the theft did not make me homeless or cause me to become an award of the state.

6.  I believe that God allowed this incident to occur because I was used by Him in a greater capacity than I can comprehend at this time (including writing this article.)  Therefore, instead of looking inward at my self and the way I feel, God has allowed me to see my own sin, bring it to light and thank Him for using me in a manner that will benefit His will.

Even though God showed me these blessings, the human inside of me still feels the hurt and pain that were caused by the sin that Jenny committed.  But I am learning how to take my eyes off myself and writing this article has been an excellent way to be cleansed and focus on the blessings I received from it.  Besides, the Bible says:

Romans, Chapter 12, Verse 19

Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.

It would have been better for Jenny to suffer the wrath of man rather than the vengeance of God, but Jenny has made that choice.  We need to pray for her conviction, not hate her; and hopefully this article will help you to turn your back on selfish behavior in your own life also.
